Context
The Neurological and Mental Health Division focuses on major adultneurological conditions and related disorders, in particular stroke, epilepsy, dementia, depression and frailty. The progressive ageing ofthe world’s populations is associated with a steady increase in allage-related diseases. Among these, diseases of the brain –cerebrovascular disease, Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerativedisorders - are particularly common. They are also major causes ofdisease burden, not only due to the disability among those affected butalso because of the demands on caregivers both formal and informal. These health problems are already substantial in economically richcountries like Australia, but they are also becoming major health issuesfor economically developing countries. There is tremendous interest indeveloping strategies that will reduce the burden of these conditions.Advances in epidemiological and clinical research, and better knowledgeof the mechanisms of brain ischaemia, degeneration and repair, suggestgreat potential for improvements to be made in the prevention, treatmentand rehabilitation of neurological conditions.
